Conflict Management: From Disagreement to a Workable Agreement

Healthy conflict is not about defeating the other person. Its goal is to understand the problem accurately, protect safety and dignity, and find a workable next step.

Look for the interest behind the position

‘Stay home on Saturday’ is a position; rest, connection, or financial concern may be the interest beneath it. Interests create more possible solutions than competing demands.

Ask each person to describe one specific issue without insults, mind-reading, or words such as always and never.

Make agreements observable

‘We will be more attentive’ is vague. ‘We will put phones away for twenty minutes at dinner’ can be reviewed. If escalation rises, take a timed break and honor the promise to return.

End the conversation when there are threats, abuse, or safety risks and seek appropriate support.

Practical plan

  1. 1Name one issue
  2. 2Listen without interruption
  3. 3Summarize the other view
  4. 4Identify both underlying needs
  5. 5Agree on one small measurable action

Frequently asked questions

Is conflict a sign of a bad relationship?

No. The form, safety, frequency, and repair process matter more than the mere existence of disagreement.

When should I stop the conversation?

Stop when there are threats, abuse, coercion, or safety concerns and prioritize support and protection.
